Unit 7

The search statement I used in Academic Search Premier is
Internet AND (chang* OR transform) AND (communicat* OR broadcast*).

News
PUSH COMES TO SHOVE: Technology helps ignite change (as in Tunisia). Except when it bolsters oppression (as in Iran).

I picked this article because it looks like it shows both the good and bad sides of free technology around the world.

Magazine
The Girl Who Changed Pakistan. (cover story)

I liked this article because it can show you that one person can make a difference. Further more, it demonstrates how powerful the internet and other online sharing sites can be.

Scholarly Journal
Gendered media, changing intimacy: internet-mediated transnational communication in the family sphere.

I picked this article because it talks about the inequality of male and female power dynamics through communications of the internet.

Summary
Using Boolean search terms really helped me in finding the right material for my research. At first I wanted to just ask Academic Search Premier or (ASP) a simple question like I usually do on Google but I buckled down and used my Boolean terms. I really like the fact that ASP has so many search fields which made it a breeze in finding different news, magazines, and scholarly journals for my subject material. In addition, having a friendly cite button made it a cinch to create a rough draft of my reference page.

  1. Hi, Bryce:

I'm glad you found using boolean successful and enjoyed the other tools available within ASP. The articles you picked seem relevant and credible however, you didn't include your ASPECT criteria for determining your scholarly article was research based, such as multiple authors, author affiliation, length of article, extensive bibliography, etc.

Overall you did a good job describing your search experience, hopefully, this will serve you well in the future.

    Cheers,
    Andrea
