Final Exam

1. Write down a topic that comes to mind when you read this article.
How students in our new technological world receive information
A. What is one research question would you ask about this topic?

Our students with higher home income relining on digital technology more then other lower income students?

B. What keywords would you use to search for this question in the databases?

(higher or lower)and income and (tech* or digital) and info* student*

2. Use a deep web resource to find articles on your topic. Write down the search statement that you used.
(higher or lower)and income and (tech* or digital) and info* student*

A.    In detail, describe the steps you took in your research process. Did your search strategy change during the process?

I just went to Proquest and copy paste my search terms and the second article looks great for my study. Before I would just type in a question in the search bar ilke I normal do for google but using Boolean terms greatly inhanced my search.

B. Select one item and provide a MLA citation.

3. After reading the article, evaluate using ASPECT and indicate the level of trustworthiness.

This article was publish relatively new. Furthermore, the publisher and author are well known. I believe this to be trustworthy.
A.   Provide your examples and which elements you use to evaluate.

I looked at the the date in which it was published. Inaddition I looked up the names of the publisher and the authors of this atricle.

B.     Explain how each ASPECT criteria applies or doesn’t apply to this article and how you would use that information to rate the credibility. Remember to use both open and deep web resources in your analysis. (This is worth 10 points.)

Looking at the ASPECT the first thing I did was look at the time the article was publish, seens this is a newer subject. Author is vary importent as well as the publisher. The source is Proquest so we can tell this is most likely a good source, I did not look at the editor but I did cite it.

4. Write a review of one of the articles.
This is a short essay (3-4 paragraphs) that demonstrates you’ve read the article and includes your opinion of which arguments are most compelling to you

After reading this statistics based article, I learned that teachers over the age of 55 are slower to learn new digital tools for learning then teacher under that age. In addition, teacher over 55 believe the students know more about digital technology then they do. Students in the lowest income bracket are less likely then higher income students to have the same resources in digital technology at schools. Furthermore, the students in rural areas don't have the necessary income to provided themselfs with the gadgets used at home and in the classroom (tablets, smart phones, E reader, ect).

Unit 10

Summary

This activity was actually easier and more entertaining then I expected. When I think of web pages and html my head spins but this basic tutorial was simple and to the point. I surf the internet almost every day searching for information, updating my Facebook account, watching the harlem shake on YouTube, checking CNN news, and who know what eles. However, I tend to take for granted the work it takes in building these web sites for me to surf. Furthermore, all the time it takes in writing the source code and customizing it to not only be user friendly but aesthetically pleasing to the user.

Unit 9

My search terms is venom (arachnids OR arthropods) and I used Google for my search engine tool.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2042310/ This is my .gov site

After going to this site I clicked on the full text PDF and right away I saw that it was wrote by PHD's and MD's which seems very creditable. Furthermore, it have a cited source at the bottom of page.

http://spiders.ucr.edu/daddylonglegs.html Next is my .edu site

I found this one to be interesting because as a kids I believed this myth. .Edu should be pretty accurate because it is a school site dealing with real information. In addition, most admins are going to be ether teachers or scholarly students under professors. This University is also "The Princeton Review's America's Best Value Colleges (2013) named UCR among the top 121 Best Western Colleges and one of America's 75 Best Value Colleges."

This one is great because it is a military operations manual. This article has a wide range in all fields of venom. It also includes a appendix with all the listing of scientific names at the end for easy reference.

This is a scholarly article I found on Wiley online library. This article seems good because it is cited well and a PHD professors wrote it. The article was first published online on 5 JAN 2002 which is relatively new for this sort of research.

In conclusion, their are many different domain site's a researcher can use to garther information on a topic. I believe .edu and .gov are going to be the most accurate web domains to use. On the other hand, they seem harder to find the exact information for me on this unit. The .org got me some nice results but the .com gave me the most however, they were vague.

Unit 8

About.com

About.com is a subject directorer that is full of information. Here are five thing I have learned in searching About.com

1. About.com has "Guide's" for particular sites. On the left cornor of the site there is a name and by clicking that it will give you the "Guide's" E-mail adderess so you can contact them with questions, where they got their sources, and ect. Furthermore, after clicking on them is gives you a short synopsis of the editor so you can see how creditable they are.

2. About.com has many different ways in finding information. On the top of the page you can ether pick Editors' Picks, Explore Topics, and Browse Categories. This gives gives you different ways of searching the web site.

3. While using Boolean search tools I saw that About.com is fair at differencing the terms but I think it could have been done better.

4. After typing in your search term you can scroll to the bottom of the page and look at related searchs for added fields from Google custom search. this is useful for cases where About.com does not have good sources for your subject material.

5. Another beneficial thing I found while searching About.com is the RSS tool. Having this can help search material come to you instead of always having to look for in at About.com. While this is useful in the long run its not always the best when crunched for time.

All in all I liked About.com and will probable use it in the future. It was really hard for me to find search tips on the help page so I just had to find most of the information by just exerimanting with the search browser. If I missed anything major please let me know.

Dogpile.com

Dogpile.com is a metasearh which implies it searchs more then one search engine. Dogpile.com uses Google, Yahoo, and Yandex for its search engines.

1. While on the home page you can click advanced search which opens up a box that allows you to type in words that you want to search for and word that you do not want in your search field. In addition, you can include or exclude a domain.

2. The preferences page is a positive part in changing your different search setting allowing you to filter, see blod search terms, track recent searchs, and search by location.

3. While at the home page you can click on about Dogpile on the bottom of the page. Then on your left hand corner click on metasearch 101. After reading the paragraph on metasearch you can click on Dogpile tricks of the trade. This will give you pointers on search terms and other Boolean related material.

4. When searching for a images you can click on the images tap and go to advanced search to filter for specific image color, size, or file format.

5.  Audio and Video searches can be filtered for playtime or file format. And news searches can be filtered by news category, location, date or source.

Bing.com

Bing.com is a search engine. Bing to me seems very flashy and gimicky.

1. Bing is very good with Boolean search terms which is good for a narrow search leading to key subject material.

2. A interseting way Bing has taught me to search is through images. By finding images related to your context you can simply click on one of the images and it will bring you to the web page.

3. While searching Bing i found out you can take a screen shot of a nice car off a show that you don't know the make or model and you can post it on a discussion page or a shopping site and let people help with your search at hand.

4. Searching for people on the internet is not always the easiest thing to do. However, Bing uses white pages while searching. this inturn, helps you in your searching needs.

5. On the Bing hompage you can click the setting button and go to wideweb. This feature allows you to search for subject material in different country/region.

Unit 7

The search statement I used in Academic Search Premier is
Internet AND (chang* OR transform) AND (communicat* OR broadcast*).

News
PUSH COMES TO SHOVE: Technology helps ignite change (as in Tunisia). Except when it bolsters oppression (as in Iran).

I picked this article because it looks like it shows both the good and bad sides of free technology around the world.

Magazine
The Girl Who Changed Pakistan. (cover story)

I liked this article because it can show you that one person can make a difference. Further more, it demonstrates how powerful the internet and other online sharing sites can be.

Scholarly Journal
Gendered media, changing intimacy: internet-mediated transnational communication in the family sphere.

I picked this article because it talks about the inequality of male and female power dynamics through communications of the internet.

Summary
Using Boolean search terms really helped me in finding the right material for my research. At first I wanted to just ask Academic Search Premier or (ASP) a simple question like I usually do on Google but I buckled down and used my Boolean terms. I really like the fact that ASP has so many search fields which made it a breeze in finding different news, magazines, and scholarly journals for my subject material. In addition, having a friendly cite button made it a cinch to create a rough draft of my reference page.

Unit 5

The search terms I used for finding  Challenges of Digital Communication are Internet and Globalization. This is a E-book on the Clark library. I believe this book to be credible in the fact that one of the publishers is  Wiley-Blackwell which is a well known in the wrighting community. Furthermore, it was published in 2012 so it is up to date.

My subject headings:

Foreign news.
Communication, International.
Journalism -- Political aspects.
Digital media.
Mass media and globalization.
Cited in MLA

Hachten, William A.; Scotton, James F.. The World News Prism : Challenges of Digital Communication. Hoboken: Wiley-Blackwell, 2011. Ebook Library. Web. 09 Feb. 2013.

The search terms I used for Summit Catalog are Internet and Globalization. Computing Our Way to Paradise was published in 2010 which brings credit to the book. It also has a bibliography so you can check sources and know that the author is not just making thing up. The differents I found between the Summit Catalog and using the Clark library are most of the books are already at the Clark library. In addition there are E-books on the Clark libray catalog and not on the Summit.

Related Subjects:(7)

  • Internet -- Social aspects.
  • Sustainable development.
  • Information technology -- Social aspects.
  • Computer Communication Networks.
  • Internet.
  • Economic Development.
  • Conservation of Natural Resources.

Books24x7 is a wonderful place to find and read books. They have a large variety of books from Windows 2007 to PC for Dummies. Another thing I like is that you can look up full books with all text or just a few chapters. In addition, you can look up backround information about authors and publishers on subject material. I think this is a great database that I look forward in using.

My search terms are Internet and Globalization for Google books.Globalization and Cultural Trends in China seems creditable because the University of Hawai'i Press released this book. The only doubt I have is that it was published in 2004 which seems to be getting pretty old.

Liu, Kang. "5." Globalization and cultural trends in China. Honolulu: University of Hawai'i Press, 2004. 137. Print.

Exploring these databases has showed me a large selection of search results even though I used the same terms. Google books had great scholarly articles but it was hard to cite the books compared to the other search engines. The Clark library was a marvelous source in finding helpful insight on subject material. Even more, they have both E-books and in house books for finding information. In finding a book that Clark does not have to offer Summit catalog is terrific because you can order it and have it delivered to Clark in just a few days. Now for looking up authors and publishers, Books24x7 has a search engine for just that. In addition, you can look up full text books or just a few chapters on subject material. Books24x7 also has a wide variety of books so you can have many choices in deciding what would be the most effective in your writing. In conclusion, there are many search engines available however, picking the right one for the matter at hand varies depending on the material.

Unit 4

1) Is a vegetarian diet healthier than a meat-based diet?

I personally like to start with a broad search engine like Google or Wikiapedia to get a good feel on my topic at hand. After getting to know some information about the subject, I would then move on to a scholarly web engine (like GVRL) to get the hard  facts on the subject.

2) Target often forces musicians to alter lyrics in order to have their CDs sold in Target stores. Is this censorship?

Since this seems to be an opinion based question, reading a magazine article on censorship can help get you educated on the material. Moving on, a subject encyclopedia has great background information for finding other arguments on censorship.

3) How much more can a college graduate expect to earn over someone with a high school diploma?

This question seems to be wanting hard facts. Therefore, I would skip browsing and go straight to a reference book to get raw statistical information over the years of college and high school diploma jobs.

4) Should educators use commercial services to combat plagiarism?

In regards to this question, I would consult a book or maybe a newspaper article on the subject of online plagiarism detection. Unfortunately, students also have access to some of these tools, which allow them to circumvent the recognition of plagiarism.

5) Is the current lack of sunspot activity affecting global warming?

Using up to date astronomical data would be key in deciding whether or not sunspot activity was affecting global warming. Therefore, I would form my opinion based on current observations of the sun's activity. This would most likely be found in current scientific news websites.

1)How is the internet helping Globalization?

The free flow of information allows people across to be informed about a wide variety of information. This allows people to make informed decisions in regards to their daily well being. Books can help in a historical fashion allowing you to look in the past to see how people commutated in the past and the out comes. further more, using media based data can show how people are commutating now.

2)what are the implications of free information?

The world wide web lets us view free information with just a click of a button. The only downside to this is not always knowing if the information is current or even accurate. Searching the internet and checking all your sources can help develope an understanding of the subject. In addition, using a modern source can see the implications of a good vs evil aspect on this subject.

3)How has the internet changed the way people communicate?

In todays internet savey society its easy enough to send a E-mail to your teacher or Skype your grandparents a thousand miles away. However somebody can have a few hundred friends on Facebook but never leaves the house and hangout personly with any of them. Looking for articles on society can help inform you how people interact with one another. Even more, viewing online statistical sources can show you trends on how people communicate in the past and present.

Summary

In this exercise, I learned the difference between an academic source and an opinion piece. Between relating the GVRL to Wikipedia, I quickly realized the difference in the quality of the sources. While Wikipedia gave a nice overview of the subject, the subject encyclopedias were much more thorough in there information. Keeping research notes allowed me to keep better track of the material I was dealing with. Furthermore, this technique can shorten the time required to cite my sources. Having specific keywords when searching for topics can help in locating information relevant to my topic.

Gale Virtual Reference Library is a wonderful place to get scholarly articles. All of the information available is written by subject experts or scholars and are most likely peer reviewed. While having used Clark's database's in the past, I was surprised to see the wealth of information available through subject encyclopedias. Taking research notes can be very useful when finding your sources in the future. Keeping track of these sources can help save valuable time while writing a paper. It does not matter how you take these notes, via E-mail, flashdrive, or good old fashion paper. Furthermore, always remember to document all of the information accurately for finding and citing correctly.

Plagiarism Unit 2

1. Last summer, my family and I traveled to Chicago, which was quite different from the rural area I grew up in. We saw the dinosaur Sue at the Field Museum, and ate pizza at Gino's East.

For this first  passage I believe that you would not have to cite this because it is the writer's own ideas, there for no citing needs to take place.

2. Americans want to create a more perfect union; they also want to establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty for everybody.

For number two I do not think it has to be cited ether because this sounds like common knowledge.

3. I find it ridiculous that 57% of high school students think their teachers assign too much homework.

Number three seems a little trick, I am pretty sure this is the writer's own idea but he is using a statistic that should be cited for the reader.

You deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham. But your statement, I am sorry to say, fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations. I am sure that none of you would want to rest content with the superficial kind of social analysis that deals merely with effects and does not grapple with underlying causes. It is unfortunate that demonstrations are taking place in Birmingham, but it is even more unfortunate that the city's white power structure left the Negro community with no alternative.

4. Martin Luther King was certain that nobody would want to be contented with a surfacy type of social analysis that concerns itself only with effects and doesn't deal with root causes.

This sounds like a summary of what DR. King has written because it's the same idea. The writer should have put a source in text at the beginning and ending of this sentence, furthermore they need a bibliography at the end of there essay.

5. Martin Luther King wrote that the city of Birmingham's "white power structure" left African-Americans there "no alternative" but to demonstrate ("Letter from the Birmingham Jail" para. 5).

Number five has direct quotations from the paragraph, therefore they do indeed need a source in text at the end of the paragraph which they did nicely.

6. In "Letter from the Birmingham Jail," King writes to fellow clergy saying that although they "deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham, your statement fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations."

For number six they almost had this one. While they did quote the passage, they failed to cite the quotation.  If only they had put a page number at the very end of this quote since they have already named the article.

7. My friend Kara told me that she loves living so close to the ocean.

Kara does not need to be quoted because she is not posing an opinion that states a fact.

8. Americans are guaranteed the right to freely gather for peaceful meetings.

Number eight does not need to be cited as it is common knowledge that the first amendment provides
us with this right.

I found this assignment to be very interesting and helpful for my future in writing. Knowing how to properly cite an author or a statistic in my papers will help me avoid plagiarism and become a more ethical writer. In addition, citing other writers gives them the proper recognition for their work. Using a style manual is very useful for citing and writing a bibliography in different formats.

What blog's can do for you!

Ok here go's my very own blog, a place I can use for online workspace or just have fun letting people know about me or how I feel about a certain topic. Today I learned how tremendous blogging as gotten on the internet and how it can bring many people together that are all interested in the same topic's and or beliefs. Having this new blog will help me be able to pull up my notes, suggesties, and highlights on a specific topic with out having to care around a a notebook or having to have to memorize what I wrote down days ago. Having this blog can help me and my friends on facebook to post more enriching conversations that other people might not appreciate or understand on normal social networking sites. In short I think this is a great idea and I hope to become better at it as time goes on.
